Salzburg 2014 enjoys huge popular support in Austria 03.11.06
87 % of Austrians are in favour of the Olympic Games in Salzburg – In the city itself 61 % say yes – Salzburg's delegation in Cuba delighted

A recent survey by Karmasin Marktforschung, the Austrian Gallup Institute, has shown very positive figures for Salzburg's bid for the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in 2014:
87 % of all Austrians and 61 % of Salzburg city residents answered “yes” to the question: “Are you in favour of the 2014 Winter Olympics being held in Salzburg?” In the State of Salzburg, 88 % are in favour.

The Salzburg 2014 bid is on the final lap. In just eight months' time, the IOC members will meet in Guatemala City to decide who will host the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in 2014. Now, at the beginning of November 2006, it is very clear that Austria wants the Games. In some of its federal states, over 90 percent were in favour of hosting the Olympics, and the results are very similar for men and women alike. In Austria as a whole, 90 % of men and 85 % of women are in favour of hosting the Games. There is also little difference in the results when broken down by age group, occupation, income or federal state. In all target groups approval was well over 80 percent.

The representative survey was carried out across the whole country. There was also a separate survey for the city of Salzburg. Harald Pitters of Karmasin Marktforschung, who was in charge of the survey, summed up the results as follows, “The data from this survey shows massive support among the people of Austria for holding the 2014 Winter Olympics in Salzburg. A clear majority of the residents of the city of Salzburg is also in favour of hosting the Winter Games. Both the general concept and the details of the bid are viewed favourably.”

The statement “The bid is just a waste of money” was also firmly rejected by Austrians, with 83 % saying they think it is not a waste of money. In the city of Salzburg, the figure was 67 %.

70 % of Salzburg city residents agreed with the statement “Having the Winter Olympics, the most important winter sport event there is, in Salzburg, would enhance the city’s reputation as a centre for sport, culture and tourism”, and only 15 % disagreed.
