District Council agrees to sign Host City Contract 13.12.06
Salzburg District Council today agreed, with a large majority, to the signing of the Host City Contract for hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in 2014 between the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the City of Salzburg.

The decision was clearly in favour of the Olympics, with a majority of 30 votes to 9. This endorsed the unanimous vote of the supervisory board on 28 November 2006. Following the confirmation of national liability and the fulfilment of IOC requirements relating to the guaranteed number of hotel rooms, Salzburg has taken another major step towards being able to promote the bid further in the coming months. On 4th July the decision will be made as to which of the Candidate Cities will have the honour hosting the Games in 2014.

Head of the bid, Fedor Radmann, said, "I am very pleased that the vote of the district councillors has gone so clearly in favour of the bid. This shows that the Olympic bid has the support of both the citizens of Austria and the politicians in Salzburg. We will use the remaining months before the decision is made in Guatemala City to continue to improve the position of our concept nationally and internationally and to communicate the many advantages of our bid across the world."

Dr. Heinz Schaden, who is Chairman of the Supervisory Board and Mayor of Salzburg, explained, "Permission to sign the Host City Contract has been granted today by the district councillors with a very large majority. With this decision, the city of Salzburg meets all the guarantees required for holding the Games."

The Mayor outlined the next steps: "On 10 January, we will submit the bid document in Lausanne and early next year we will welcome the IOC Evaluation Commission to Salzburg. There is still a lot of work to be done before the decision in Guatemala, but we will know how to use this time for the bid."

For Salzburg 2014, today's decision is an endorsement of its committed long-term work and it provides great motivation for the tasks that lie ahead. The current focus is currently on completing the bid document and continuing with the national and international campaign.
