Bid Addresses Key Challenge of Reconnecting Youth to the Olympic Winter Games
Franz Klammer, Olympic legend and Salzburg 2014 International Chairman, expressed his excitement today that the IOC Evaluation Commission Report recognized the vision of Salzburg for reconnecting the young to the Olympic Winter Games. “Our aim all along has been to serve as inspiration to the next generation and today’s Report recognizes our ability to deliver on that goal,” Klammer said. “The Commission clearly saw our potential to attract young people to every sport and every venue—with as many as 50 million of them living within a day’s drive of our city.” “Our plan is designed to truly celebrate the magic of winter sport throughout Salzburg and in our Olympic Youth Festival, which will capture the imagination of the world,” Klammer said. “Salzburg’s plan provides a new level of access to the Games, giving young people and young families the ability to experience the Winter Olympics in a single day. Klammer also cited the environmental advantages of the bid: “The Commission recognized the importance of the traditional alpine setting of our region, our world-class venues and our long history of hosting winter sports events. They made clear that because of the investment that has taken place over many years, the environmental impact of the Games will be minimized and would provide a positive sustainable legacy for the future.” As a great Olympic champion, Klammer highlighted the importance of the athlete experience. He said, “To perform at your best you need cheering crowds packing every venue and there is no doubt that Salzburg will deliver sell out arenas for every event. I believe that Salzburg will host a magical Winter Games.” |
