Olympic Summer Athletes Support the Olympic Winter Games – National German Rowing Team to Back Salzburg 2014 08.06.07
On their way from the Rowing World Cup in Linz to their training camp at lake Weissensee in Austria, the scullers of the German national rowing team made a stopover in Berchtesgaden/Koenigssee. There they got a special license for a training unit on lake Koenigssee, the 'king among the Bavarian lakes', which owes part of its fame to the intro scene of 'The Sound of Music'. Two quadruple sculls, a double sculls and a single sculls – the team rowed to St. Bartholomae and back to Echostueberl.

And then the athletes, who are training for the World Rowing Championships to be held in less than 100 days in Munich (26th August to 2nd September) on the 1972 Olympic course, visited yet another prominent spot at the famous lake: the bobsleigh and skeleton track of Koenigssee, which is part of the Salzburg bid concept for the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games 2014 and which is planned to host the bob, luge and skeleton competitions.

Georg Hackl, Salzburg 2014 Ambassador, explained the Salzburg Bid to the numerous world rowing champions and Olympic athletes. And, fascinated by the commitment for the Winter Olympics, the summer athletes spontaneously expressed their support for the Salzburg bid to host the Olympic Winter Games 2014.

Representing the national team, Christian Schreiber, spokesman of the scullers, said, ‘I am still thrilled by the experience we had in our training unit on lake Koenigssee. It’s just natural they call it the king among the Bavarian lakes. I can very well imagine the Olympic bob, luge and skeleton competitions being hosted here in winter 2014 – in all this beauty, with all the experience of the organisers and all the enthusiasm of the population. Here, the athletes will find the best possible conditions and, therefore, we are very proud to publicly support the Salzburg bid to host the Olympic Winter Games 2014. For the decision on 4th July, we’ll keep our fingers crossed for Salzburg 2014, of course.’

By the way, there have been some rowers who, following their career in summer sports, became bobsleigh pusher athletes. So who knows: if Salzburg 2014 is selected to host the Winter Games 2014 we might meet some of the rowers of the German national team again.
