As an Olympic host city, Salzburg is uniquely positioned and equipped to deliver an extraordinary number of benefits to the entire Olympic Movement. Recognized as one of the world’s most magical destinations and thanks to the fact that most of its Games time infrastructure is already in place, Salzburg would increase the global appeal of the Olympic Winter Games to the level of a “can’t miss” event.
In matching the excellence of the competition with the excellence of its host city in Salzburg, the Olympic Movement would strengthen the vital revenue streams from broadcasters and corporations that ultimately fund the IFs and the NOCs around the world, in essence creating the optimum legacy for the greater good, whilst strengthening the Olympic Movement worldwide. A city’s Olympic Legacy is generally considered to be that which is left after the Games, but Salzburg is redefining the concept of legacy by building what it needs in advance of the Games. Over the last two decades, more than US$2.4 billion has been invested in Salzburg’s infrastructure - in transport, accommodation and venues - in ways that directly enhance the city’s ability to host the Games. With only three new sport venues to build and without the stress of massive deadline construction pressures, Salzburg can concentrate on creating a magical experience for all participants, for athletes, spectators, the young, media representatives, and the whole Olympic family. Winter Games in Salzburg would also lead to the elevation of Austria’s tradition of ice sports with two new permanent ice arenas being built and one arena scheduled to be completely renovated post-Games. A legacy for the next generation will be built, bringing back the young: thanks to its great location at the heart of Europe, its Olympic Express Ticket programme and its Olympic Youth Festival concept, Salzburg could help the Olympic Movement to achieve one of its primary objectives - rekindling the passion of young people for winter sport. Taking part in the Games would be a “once-in-a-lifetime Olympic experience in a single day” for the young, but it would also mean a long-time investment for NOCs from around the world, because the chalets of the Olympic Village will be moved to five of Austria’s leading sports communities and set up as year-round training centres offering superb conditions and facilities. Most importantly, Salzburg would offer the Olympic Movement the best legacy of all, strengthening it with “something money can’t buy”: a one-hundred-year old history of authentic alpine hospitality, a unique heritage in organizing winter sports events, sold-out events, competitions produced at the highest levels of excellence, a storybook setting that will deliver a magical atmosphere for spectators and television viewers alike…
