Expansion progressing well for Salzburg 2014 key venue 14.06.06
Eight days before the International Olympic Committee selects the Candidate Cities for the right to host the 2014 Winter Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, Salzburg is already expanding one of the main venues in its Games Plan.

The Euro Stadium in the City of Salzburg, which would host the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, if Salzburg is awarded the honour of hosting the Games, is undergoing a major expansion.

The Euro Stadium capacity will be expanded from 18,500 to 30,000 spectators. The first pre-works on the expansion began in April 2006, and the 11-hour process to fit the 17,000 square metre stadium roof was completed last weekend.

The stadium is being extended for the EURO 2008 European Championships.  The 20 million euros additional construction work will be fully completed in summer 2007 and the stadium will host three EURO 2008 matches in the summer of 2008.

Commenting on the Euro Stadium expansion, Dr Heinz Schaden, Mayor of the City of Salzburg and head of the advisory board of Salzburg 2014 said: “We are delighted that the Euro Stadium expansion is progressing to plan.  We are gaining some invaluable experiences from our involvement in EURO 2008, and if we are fortunate enough to be awarded the honour to stage the 2014 Winter Games, these will be put to good effect.  It would be a great honour for everyone in Salzburg if the Euro Stadium were to host the 2014 Opening and Closing ceremonies.”

Ends.
