Austrian Parliament passes new “Olympic Law” 17.07.06
In its last session before the summer break the Austrian Parliament (Nationalrat) has passed a new Olympic Law with overwhelming cross party support from all the major Austrian political parties, together these parties control 166 of the 183 seats in the Austrian parliament.

Through this new Olympic Law, the Federal Government has now granted all necessary guarantees to enable Salzburg to host the Olympic Winter Games and Paralympics in 2014, should Salzburg be chosen as the Host City by the IOC session in Guatemala City, July 2007.

Heinz Jungwirth, secretary general of the National Olympic Committee of Austria said today:

“This is a milestone for the Salzburg 2014 bid and another crucial step in our quest to become Host City for 2014. This new Olympic law gives all necessary guarantees to the IOC. I’m thrilled that in a country whose citizens are so passionate about sport that our federal politicians have also shown their commitment and support in this way.

“With this broad political support right across party lines and including all nine states we can prove to the IOC, to the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), to International Sports Federations (IFs), sponsors, broadcasters and journalists that Austria is united in it’s bid to host the 2014 Winter Games. This Olympic Law is impressive proof of the extraordinary political support within Austria for the Olympic Movement and its ideals.”
