Tauern Tunnel Improvements Boost Salzburg 2014 Transport Plans 15.09.06
Second lane an important part of Olympic transportation proposal
Salzburg 2014, the team leading the campaign to bring the 2014 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games to Austria, has received a boost to its travel plans with the news that second lanes will be added to the southern section of the Tauern motorway by the end of 2010.

Commenting on the improvements, Salzburg Bid Games Plan Director Gernot Leitner said: “These improvements have a real international dimension to them which is of great importance for a significant event such as the Winter Games. The construction of second lanes for the Katschberg and Tauern tunnels will shorten travel times considerably, including peak travel times from the south of Austria, but also from the neighbouring states of Slovenia and Italy.  Fans from the south of Austria, Italy, Slovenia and Croatia will find their journey much easier.”

The most compact proposal of the last 30 years
Salzburg 2014 offers the most compact proposal for the Winter Games in the last 30 years. 10 of the 11 planned venues have direct rail or highway access, the average village to venue travel time is just 12 minutes while the total travel time end-to-end is just 55 minutes.

The Salzburg subway (S1, S2, S3) and the “Inter-mountain lines” are the backbone of Salzburg 2014’s transport proposals, and the regional bus lines on the A1 and A10, major and minor roads and the city bus lines are also included. Individual transport will be restricted to temporary parking spaces and visitors will be taken to the event sites by regional routes and city buses.  The Olympic Family will be transported by specially organised cars, coaches and buses.
