A stunning success reflecting Salzburg’s long-term commitment to Sport
Over 300,000 spectators from more than 15 countries filled the streets of Salzburg over the last weekend to watch the dazzling speed of the two-wheel competitors in the International Cycling Union (UCI) 2006 Road World Championships in Salzburg. A television audience of more than 400 million from more than 60 countries witnessed the achievements of the athletes, the magical atmosphere of the city and the organizational excellence of the hosts. Also the President of the Federal Republic of Austria, Heinz Fischer joined the event and was enthusiastic.

UCI President Pat McQuaid was full of praise for the organizational skills behind the event and especially for the 4,000 member team who put it on. Salzburg fielded 1,000 staff and 3,000 volunteers to produce a seamless show the spectacular stage of the city. 
“This was a great championship for the UCI, for the cyclists and for the spectators” said McQuaid. “Salzburg proved its ability to organize sports events at a high level of excellence. The magical setting of the city gave us a beautiful backdrop.”

Know for its abilities to host great winter sports events at its world-class ski resorts, Salzburg will follow the success of UCI championships by hosting part of the EURO 2008 football tournament in hopes of demonstrating its summer skills. Then the city will turn back to winter in its quest for the 2014 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.

Superb weather on the final days of competition created the perfect atmosphere. But even a bit of heavy rain in the trials failed to dampen the spirits of the international fans.

Jan Dekker from Holland, who had arrived in Salzburg five days before the start of the championships, said: "We knew that Austria was a very charming country, but the hospitality at this race was simply beautiful.  A great race in a great place.” 
Italian Franco Carisi had similar things to say: "We are a cycling-mad nation and around 50,000 of my fellow countrymen were here with me on this final weekend. My friends and I were really impressed by the friendliness of the hosts—from the guesthouse staff to the police. It’s dream-like scenery. I am definitely coming back".

Hermann Stohl, from Germany, said: "It is good that after the Football World Cup in Germany, Austria has had the chance to prove how much fun and enjoyment it offers as well. It is one big party for the whole world.”

The President of the Federal Republic of Austria, Heinz Fischer said on Austrian Television ORF: It´s a fantastic event and it shows, that Austrian is able to organize sports events in all sizes. The success of the UCI Road World Championships here in Salzburg will provide huge support for the UEFA Football European Championships in 2008 and Salzburg´s  bid for the Olympic Winter Games 2014.”
