A Team driven by Veterans of Winter Sport
Management Team Salzburg 2014

Salzburg 2014 President and Chairman, Heinz Schaden,
is the driving force behind the movement. For him it is the second bid process in a row: It was under his guidance that a multi-party agreement was signed to guarantee full support for the bid by the national and the regional governments. Heinz Schaden knows how important hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games 2014 would be for the Olympic region of Salzburg; constantly and with maximum commitment he promotes the bid both nationally as well as internationally.

‘The bid has the full political support, we have all guarantees, our National Olympic Committee is highly committed, our bid team is experienced, efficient and fully motivated. Salzburg could give the Olympic movement unique Olympic and Paralympic Games 2014. I am fully convinced that the IOC in Guatemala City will make a decision FOR the athletes and the Olympic movement – and I hope it will be to the advantage of Salzburg.’

Franz Klammer, Chairman International Salzburg 2014:
He is an Olympic hero – thanks to his spectacular Olympic downhill triumph in Innsbruck 1976 – cheered by his fellow countrymen, the biggest number of people that have ever attended a single Olympic event. And it's also the years that followed his sports career that are impressive: Together with 42 other sports celebrities, such as Franz Beckenbauer, Mark Spitz, Kip Keino, Nawal el Moutawakel, Bobby Charlton, etc., he is a member of the Laureus Academy, which tries to develop sports and humanitarian principles all over the world. He dedicates his life – also after his active career – to sports, in his Franz Klammer Foundation and as the Chairman International for Salzburg 2014:

‘Sports is my life. Therefore, when I was asked whether I would like to internationally represent the Salzburg Bid, I did not hesitate to accept this task. Sports is a language that is spoken in every country; it is always a good opportunity to help and to bring the people together. I owe so much to the Olympic movement, and now I would like to give back some of it; I think that I can do that with Salzburg 2014.

Gabi Burgstaller, Provincial Governor of Salzburg,
is the first Olympic ambassador of the Province of Salzburg. She made a major contribution by bringing the Republic of Austria, the Province of Salzburg and the municipalities together to support the Olympic movement.

‘Salzburg is looking forward to the big finish. We are absolutely sure that we offer something that brilliantly corresponds with the Olympic idea. "Salzburg offers something money can’t buy." As the representative of the Province of Salzburg I guarantee that the Province of Salzburg supports the Bid; we all share the thrill of the decision on 4th July and we will keep our fingers crossed for Salzburg 2014. We are a winter sports country and have proved at hundreds of World Cup and World Championship events that we are able to organise events on the highest-possible level. Should we have the honour to organise the Winter Games 2014, the Olympic family, the athletes, the sponsors, the media and, of course, the spectators will experience Winter Games on the highest-possible technical level and with an atmosphere that will make these Games just unforgettable.’

Leo Wallner,
has been the President of the Austrian Olympic Committee (AOC) for 17 years and a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for eight years. Within the Salzburg 2014 Bid he takes a pro-active cross-functional leadership position. For Leo Wallner and for Austria this is the forth application to host Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in a row.

‘The Austrian Olympic Committee fully backs the Bid because we are convinced that Winter Games in Salzburg can give a lot to the Olympic movement. The Salzburg concept corresponds with the values and the pillars of Olympism and of the IOC: sports, culture and environment. Moreover, Austria is a passionate sports country. Olympic Games in Salzburg, in that magnificent atmosphere, would convey, to young people all over the world, the unquestionable power of sports, both as a personal value as well as a global sign of peace.’

Heinz Jungwirth, Secretary General of AOC,
has been working in the Olympic business for 25 years and is the longest-serving secretary general. In the Bid he takes a key position regarding planning and international relations to ensure and to optimally implement the requirements of the National Olympic Committee and of the athletes.

‘I have been working as the Secretary General for 25 years; in this period I was involved in many commissions and I was the Chef de Mission of the Austrian teams at Summer and Winter Games. Based on these experiences I guarantee that, at Olympic Winter Games, there has never ever been a Host City that would have been able to host the Games seven years before the actual start. The Salzburg concept concentrates on the requirements of the athletes – and that’s how it should be.’

Rudolf Höller, Executive Director of Salzburg 2014 and head of Bid Operations,
successfully orchestrated numerous big winter sports events as a member of the organising team and was the Secretary General of the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 2005 in Oberstdorf. Höller is known as an official FIS expert and has internationally proved his qualities regarding the development, the management and the realisation of events at several occasions. ‘When I look at the fabulous fundament of the Salzburg Bid with its existing infrastructure, it is a dream for me to organise Olympic Winter Games in Salzburg.’

Gernot Leitner, Executive Director of Salzburg 2014,
had been a professional volleyball player for 15 years before, as an architect, he specialised in the design of sports venues. Leitner, who was head of sports venue constructions of the Salzburg 2010 Bid, has further developed and improved the Games Plan Salzburg 2014 according to the suggestions of the IOC Evaluation Commission 2010. In addition to the tasks of an Executive Director, Leitner is head of Games Plan and International Relations.

‘I have the unique opportunity to combine my two biggest passions, sports and architecture, with the Olympic dream of Salzburg 2014: This will be of benefit to the whole Olympic movement, from the athletes to the people watching the Games on TV. Should we have the honour to host the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games 2014, I will be pleased to bring in my experiences from both sides, the organisational one and the one of the athlete, to obtain best-possible results, especially for all participants.

Walter Pfaller, Head of the Provincial Sports Office Salzburg,
has a wide experience in the area of Paralympic Games – both as an athlete as well as an official. He has taken part in seven Paralympic Summer Games – five times as a successful athlete: In 1988 he won gold in the pentathlon in Seoul. In the Salzburg 2014 Bid Committee Pfaller, who is confined to a wheelchair, acts as an interface to the Province of Salzburg and as a highly-qualified expert in the area of Paralympics.

‘Hosting the Paralympic Games 2014 in Salzburg could be another milestone in the history of Paralympic Games. There is the chance to show, to people with special needs all over the world, top-level sports and to transport the message that "it’s not the performance of the handicapped athlete but the meaning of sports for handicapped people". For me it would be a dream, a vision to be able to say, after the Games in Salzburg 2014, that I have been part of the Paralympic history for more than 40 years.’

‘Why I – as a Bavarian – want the Games in Salzburg? First, because my three year-old daughter asked me to bring the Games to Salzburg – she really enjoyed the opening celebration in Torino a lot. Making this wish come true is my duty as a father! And, I was there when Mark Spitz, in 1972 in Munich, and Franz Klammer, in 1976 in Innsbruck, won their gold medals. That’s so much Olympic Spirit – enough for more than one life!’
